Hire American Graduates First : We need a level playing field when it comes to the high cost of university education in the United States compared to the rest of the world

Elon Musk is not wrong when he says that we need to allow the best minds that are not US Citizens access to jobs in the United States. However, at the same time we need to understand exactly why we need to rely on foreigners for our best minds.

Elon Musk, like most Canadian citizens obtained a degree at a Canadian university at a cost of $5000 per year.

In other countries of the world, the cost of a university degree for its citizens is even less, and some times free. This is especially true in countries like India , China and most European Union undergraduate studies.

Here in the United States it costs a fortune in comparison. Students that get into a good school need to take out loans to pay the tuition.

Even non-citizens in most countries pay a fraction of what it costs a typical American student that wants to attend a good American university.

As in every free trade agreement that the United States has entered into, we need to make sure that there is a level playing field when we decide to hand out H1B visas especially to people that did not have to pay for their education.

I am not saying stop the immigration program, but rather have some way of lowering the cost of universities to Americans at the same time.

Elon Musk with his billions and billions of dollars, should certainly put some up to help Americans go to university. Congress should fund Univerisities in the same way other countries do.

Importing intelligence is a short term solution. The long game is to help intelligent American students financially so they can compete equally at a level playing field with the rest of the world.
