Early morning Saturday, May 30, 2020 , a couple of motorists called 911 notifying authorities that the roof of the strip shopping center located at south west corner of 14th and University Drive was on fire. Our live scanner feed of the Coral Springs Police and Fire Department radio system captured the initial alarm and the subsequent response ( Click on Play button above to hear – if it did not start automatically ).
Within seconds of receiving the call, you can hear the experienced 911 dispatch operator sound the alarm to several stations of the Coral Springs Fire department. Right next to her, the Coral Springs Police department’s dispatch operator put out the call to other units in the area to respond immediately and help out.
5 minutes after the call to action was sounded, the first unit was on scene and others from around the city started to arrive one by one. With the fire raging through the roof of the Nu Sushi restaurant, the cool and calm battalion commander positioned his forces to fight this beast. One of his main concerns was to protect the houses located behind the center – they were successful.
Unfortunately most of the businesses in the center all suffered damage. Extensive damage can be seen where the Nu Sushi restaurant now lies in ruins, along with adjacent nail salon, dentist and dry cleaners. No injuries, but the business owners who have already been suffering the shutdown due to COVID-19 now are faced with more pain.
