It’s The End of the World as We Know It – and We Will All Be Fine

In case none of you have any idea of what the title of this article is , it happens to be the R.E.M. song that describes the calamity of life. Click here to listen to it.

REM’s Song

The real incredible calamity is the over reaction that is occurring by everyone everywhere in this country. This is a direct result of the lack of leadership we have and the distrust that the government is not telling us the truth.

The result is panic has set in, and the same deal that happens a few times a year when a hurricane hits this area, now hit us and what looks like a sustained several months ahead. It’s the overreaction to events that force people to remove common sense from their brain. When it comes to a hurricane you see long lines of people waiting for gas – even though in the past , when a hurricane has hit they had plenty of it, and went absolutely no where. They did not need it , and despite their experiences with previous hurricanes, they still line up. Same deal with water. For some reason every hurricane warning people go out and stack up on water, even though our water supply has never been compromised and no one at public works has ever gone out and bought water. They are not worried about.

However, many of you will say this is different. Never before has this generation ever faced a world changing event, like the plagues of the past. The roots are the same. It is hard to distinguish panic – or classify panic. It is so extreme that there can be no scale to it. In the Corona virus panic buying, people are thinking they are going to run out of the essentials that they need to survive. Of all things that one would think of that people would be stockpiling – Toilet Paper never came to my mind. Yet, Toilet paper it is – that is- that at the end of the world as they know it, the one supply they must have is Toilet Paper.

Empty shelves – no toilet paper – this is the end of the world as we know it.

However, the possibility that they may run out of toilet paper, seems to come to some people’s mind instead of picking up a bible or looking toward common sense. I am not sure why the current situation has affected us in this way. When I was growing up, my parents told me of the time in the 30’s and 40’s where there was no toilet paper, and they simply used newspaper. It was readily available and no doubt quite handy since they often read it while they were doing their business.

One tree produces about 200 rolls (100 pounds (45 kg)) of toilet paper and about 83 million rolls are produced per day.[12] Global toilet paper production consumes 27,000 trees daily.[29]

All we need to do is wash our hands

If you are a person that is into the bible, have a gander at Exodus Chapter 30 and go to versuses19 , 20 and 21( click here) . The significance of this passage is that it points to exactly what we all need to be doing. ” Wash you Hands – and you will not die.” Ultimately that is what is being told to the Jews by G_d before entering the temple. Back several thousand years ago, it seems that personal hygiene was what G_d wanted of all of us. If you are in the belief that the bible has a message for us all, then this is the message – simple – and the government did not think of this first.

So this it. The one item that people cannot do without is toilet paper. Forget religion. Forget those other items like hand soap, cleaning your keyboard on your computer, disinfecting your cell phone and not touching your face – Nope – Instead something to wipe your ass – obviously the most important part of the body to some people. That is the one place some of us are focused on.

I know what you are thinking. I am making fun of a situation affecting all of us and that I should really really take all of this seriously. I am taking it seriously. I am telling everyone that this calamity will pass and we will all have to get use to that fact that it is the end of the world as we know it – and we all will be fine. We just have to adapt to the new reality that government will never ever eliminate this corona virus and there might be others just as bad or more lethal to come. As with terrorists after 9/11, there is only so much you can do. Except in this case, what we can do is wash our hands. Something simple.

Silver Lining ?

I am quite surprised that no one is stating the obvious. Since viruses in generally cause more deaths every month that are not the corona-virus, we may be on the brink of eliminating or wiping the entire virus slate clean and starting over. Since the world and us are now forced to adopt rules regarding hygiene – trying to prevent the contagious virus from spreading – we are also preventing all of the others from doing the same thing. The Rhinovirus, the common cold, may be on the bring of extinction since the washing of the hands and distancing may prevent its common transmission. Several others may be on the way out as well, since the incubation times of most are well under the 14 days talked about with Corona-virus. This is all very difficult to think about positively, when the only thought in some peoples’ mind are the hording of toilet paper.

We now are shutting down our society, our way of life. This will result in higher stress, more suicides, more people out of work, more crimes, more families breaking up, more financial hardships , more of everything that can result from putting in isolation removing what all of us do best : Socialize. It is amazing that we are not concerned about this.

All most can think about is that they need to hoard something that we believe to be required to be civilized. Something to wipe our behinds? That is our defining moment here in America?

All of us need to do as G_d said. Wash our hands. We need to realize that it is the end of the world as we know it, adapt to the new reality , go on with our lives, and we all will be just fine.
