Coral Springs Election for Mayor 2010: Nice Guy versus Tree Hugger

TIME FOR CHANGE VOTE FOR JIM GLEASON by Howard Melamed My tax bill has gone up this year even though my property value came down.  I have to get Satellite TV because for some reason this city only allows one cable TV provider , and they don’t provide.   We have serious problems with crime in this city  and we  have a police force that is underpaid and mad, so no wonder they have no heart when they stop you and give you a ticket.  We have a city center of the performing arts that doesn’t perform.  I am tired of…

CELL PHONE SAVES LADY AS CAR SINKS INTO CANAL GUARD RAIL FAILS AGAIN by Howard Melamed LISTEN TO 911 CALL :   If  a woman did not have her cell phone with her when her car plunged into a canal  on 29th street in Coral Springs at 4:41 am, she would have drowned. Very early every morning, Eva Rubina, a nice 76 year old lady drives to the Coral Springs Teen center located at 10013 NW 29th street, on the north Side of Mullins park and feeds the ducks and  stray cats.  She has been doing this for years.  However…

Bury the Horse: Coral Springs Art is Embarrassing

by P. Casso  A few years ago I wrote an article called  “F-ART Exhibition in Coral Springs: Tasteful or Tasteless? “ providing a sarcastic view of the shameful disgusting art that was displayed at various places within our city.  A newly formed art committee of Coral Springs decided that the flora and fauna were not beautiful enough that we needed to add some inanimate objects to provide some ‘ class’ to our city.  Coral Springs commissioners went along with it agreeing with the committee with some credibility.  The committee claimed that they were privately funded, except for the fact that  the…

Coral Springs Boom or Bust? Grandmother Robbed

by S. Kopperl I have lived in Coral Springs for more than 25 years. I live in Zip code 33076.  I just read some interesting information about this Zip code. The South Florida Business Journal has declared it the 5th wealthiest in South Florida and call it a “ Boomburg”. They claim that ” The newest additions to the suburbs, these communities are home to younger families who live a busy-upscale lifestyle. The median age is 33.7. This market has the highest population growth. At 5.3 percent annually-more than 4.5 times the national figure”.  It appears they left one thing…

“We don’t need no education”

by Sid Kopperl Yesterday I heard that the School Board of Broward County has to make more severe cuts, as they are out of money.  They are firing teachers, cutting or eliminating Art, Music, P.E., Speech, Library, etc. They are going to layoff 800/1,000 more people. Maybe they could layoff a few thousand more if we eliminate Math or English!   I’m so angry; I don’t know where to start. They are doing this because tax revenues are down. Tax revenues are down because house values have dropped and because more people are now not paying their taxes.  For a number…

Toro Restaurant Review

By:  Renee Dohm and Richard Gordon TORO 2554 University Drive Coral Springs, FL  33065 (954) 344-9523 http://www.torosushithai.com/   If the most valued sushi ingredient is toro, the fatty cut of the fish, then the restaurant Toro has earned its name in worth by bringing an affordable mix of sushi staples, modern rolls and platters to their menu. When you enter through the door, you are greeted with a friendly smile and a hello from the sushi chefs and wait staff.  The effort put into the presentation of each dish is exceptional.  This attention to detail has become a rarity in…
