How to Solve the Ecological Disaster in the Gulf and Turn the Oil Spill into A Gold Rush

by H.Melamed

There has to be a better solution to the cleanup of  the current oil spill in the gulf of Mexico.  Current deployment of the fisherman and clean up crews is really not cutting it so to speak, as more an more oil hits the shores of Louisiana, or Florida or Alabama.  The worst ecological disaster in the United States, calls for drastic measures to get the clean up done.

So far I have seen nothing that would indicate that drastic measures are being deployed, nor anything creative being done to remove the oil spill and return the enviroment to its original state. The government said that it was looking for new creative ways to solve the problem.  We need to throw money at the problem, without throwing it away.

My solution :  Pay anyone money to turn over oil they find.  In fact, with more than 40 million gallons of crude oil spilled  in the gulf, I bet if we offer anyone and everyone $100 per gallon of crude oil they extract from the gulf,  this problem would be solved ....quickly!  In fact, the price would set off a new " Crude Rush" similar to the California Gold Rush where settlers made their way in search of new fortune in prospecting.  Sending the word around the world that the US Government with pay you $100 per gallon, will attract investors, entrepreneurs, workers ....anyone and everyone one that would be chomping at the bit to get their  ' stake' of ocean to make the money.

The added benefit would be that all of these people need places to stay, eat, etc.....and the gulf coast hotels that are now losing money would be ahead of the game.  We may even see a brothel or two as saloons set up to service the new prospecting customers.

Even those Tar Balls ( seen on the right)  washing up on the beaches would provide the  Golden Nugget so to speak to anyone that finds them.  Assuming that the average tar ball is the size of a baseball,  it would take 18 tar balls per gallon.  That means you would get $5.33 per tar ball !  That's better than those beach combers that use metal detectors looking for all kinds of junk.   The gulf coast beaches would be lined with prospectors gathering the balls and cleaning the beaches at the same time.  The money they make of course would be spent locally providing a badly needed injection into the economy.

The total cost of this program would be $4 billion if of course BP does not try to recover any of the crude themselves.  Of course if the oil keeps flowing into the gulf at the rate of 700,000 gallons per day...that means another $70 Million dollars in Crude Gold available to anyone that wants to claim it. Even the fisherman that are losing thousands every day would re-bait their hooks in search of tar balls, and outfit their boats with suction equipment.  Fishing would take on a whole different meaning.

With this kind of money, the problem from both an ecological and economical impact would be solved!  In fact,  I can see no better use for that  'stimulus' money everyone seems to be talking about.
